Dead Man Breathing The incredible true story of one man's rise from the flames.

Continue Reading “Explosion on the rig! Fire on the rig! I’m on fire!” My yells turned to screams that were absorbed into the whoosh of the flames . . .

The fire is gorgeous—teal blues, glittering yellows, oranges, reds—all swirling together and lighting up the night sky. But engulfed in the middle of this blazing inferno, Billy Jack McDaniel is literally roasting to death. What started out as a normal working day in the oil fields of East Texas on March 3, 2006, has transformed into what many believe is the worst work-related burn injury in history.

In the blink of an eye, this event changes a young couple’s “American Dream” into a nightmare journey through the fires of tragedy. With burns covering more than ninety-five percent of Jack’s once strong, strapping body, his survival and eventual recovery seem impossible. Most people, including the health-care professionals, do not expect him to live. There is nothing to look forward to but pain, suffering, and an agonizing death. Yet, Jack’s loving, determined wife, A’Leta, and their little girl, Carney, support him with unyielding love and dedication. A’Leta insists—almost supernaturally—that despite the grim prognosis her beloved husband will survive his injuries. She knows that Billy Jack McDaniel has the heart of a lion and the incredible will to live.

Dead Man Breathing is the true story of a living miracle—one man’s refusal to die.
